Our 6-Week Learn to Skate program is designed to provide beginner skaters ages 18 and under with a fun and positive introduction to skating.
No previous skating experience is required.
The program will incorporate USA Hockey’s youth development philosophy, emphasizing age-appropriate instruction, activity, repetition, confidence and fun.
Participants will work on balance and proper athletic stance, falling and getting back up safely, forward skating, starting and stopping, turning and changing direction, edge control, agility, coordination and introductory backward skating.
Rather than having participants spend long periods standing in lines, sessions will incorporate station-based instruction, games, races and movement challenges designed to keep skaters active.
The goal is to provide as many quality repetitions as possible while allowing participants to learn in a fun and encouraging environment.
Most importantly, we want skaters to build confidence on the ice and leave every session excited to come back to the rink.
For participants interested in hockey, Learn to Skate provides the skating foundation needed to progress into Learn to Play Hockey.
Learn to Skate – Equipment Requirements
All Learn to Skate participants must have their own ice skates and helmet. A bike helmet is acceptable; however, a hockey helmet is strongly encouraged for added protection. Elbow and knee pads also encouraged but not mandatory. Skate rentals are expected to be available; please confirm availability with the arena before attending.
20 years of Major Junior and professional hockey experience. Strong fundamentals, hockey IQ, creativity and confidence.
